"Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today," Brockman said in a statement. "I’m super proud of what we’ve all built together since starting in my apartment eight years ago.

"We’ve been through tough & great times together, accomplishing so much despite all the reasons it should have been impossible.

"But based on today’s news, I quit. Genuinely wishing you all nothing but the best.

"I continue to believe in the mission of creating safe AGI that benefits all of humanity."

However, only days later, on November 22, it was revealed that OpenAI was bringing Altman back as CEO and Brockman would be returning as well.

"Returning to OpenAI & getting back to coding tonight," Brockman wrote on Wednesday via X.

Altman also took to social media to address his return, writing: "I love openai, and everything i’ve done over the past few days has been in service of keeping this team and its mission together.

"When i decided to join msft on sun evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team. with the new board and w satya’s support, i’m looking forward to returning to openai, and building on our strong partnership with msft."

Why was Sam Altman temporarily fired from OpenAI?

On November 17, 2023, the OpenAI board announced they were letting go of Sam Altman because he "was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities."

The board further explained: "The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.

"We are grateful for Sam’s many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI.

"At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward.

"We can say definitively that the board’s decision was not made in response to malfeasance or anything related to our financial, business, safety, or security/privacy practices.

"This was a breakdown in communication between Sam and the board."

In response to his termination, Altman told his X followers: "i loved my time at openai.

"It was transformative for me personally, and hopefully the world a little bit. most of all i loved working with such talented people. will have more to say about what’s next later."

When was OpenAI founded?

On December 11, 2015, OpenAI was launched by co-founders; Altman, Brockman, Reid Hoffman, Jessica Livingston, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, Amazon Web Services, Infosys, and Y Combinator Management.

Headquartered in Mission District, San Francisco, Musk was noted as the organization's largest donor during the company's early stages.

"Our goal is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return," the team shared in their mission statement.

"Since our research is free from financial obligations, we can better focus on a positive human impact.

"We believe AI should be an extension of individual human wills and, in the spirit of liberty, as broadly and evenly distributed as possible.

"The outcome of this venture is uncertain and the work is difficult, but we believe the goal and the structure are right.

"We hope this is what matters most to the best in the field."
