I’m an interior designer – how your choice of floor can make you instantly look cheap & the chic style to choose instead
HARDWOOD floors are timeless and work well for any home – unless you choose a trendy style that will look cheap in just a few years.
Three styles in particular will make your home look cheap, cluttered, and dirty, but if you heed an interior designer's warning, you can elevate your space instead.

Interior designer Phoenix Grey is nicknamed the "Design Daddy" on TikTok, where he has nearly 125k followers.
Grey warned against the most common mistakes homeowners make with hardwood floors, and provided a chic suggestion for elevating your space instead.
"Don't make this mistake in your home if you're trying to make it look more high-end," he warned, showing a hardwood floor with narrow planks.
Choosing a floor with narrow floorboards, especially in a wide array of colors, will make the room look "way too busy," the designer said.

"It's going to clutter your space more," Grey added. "If you want that more luxe and high-end look with whatever you're choosing for your flooring, make sure they have a wider plank style."
While you're choosing new flooring, pay attention to the shade and finish of the wood, too.

Silvery grey tones were once a desirable, sophisticated look, but despite his last name, Grey is wholeheartedly against the shade.
"Whatever you do, do not choose grey in any sense for flooring," he said. While it used to be trendy, he said, the color "has been out for a while now."

There's a laundry list of reasons to avoid the color: grey, said Grey, is difficult to style.
It clashes with other decor, it often has a green undertone that casts unflattering hues on furniture, and it can start looking dull quickly.
Similarly, you can skip very dark brown or black floors, which look stunning in the pages of home design magazines.
"They will never look this good," Grey warned.
When black wood floors are lived-in, instead of just for display, they show dirt...and more.
"You will see everything," Grey said. "You will see every footprint, every speck of dust, every hair imaginable."

So what should you look for when you're picking new flooring? Grey recommended a herringbone or chevron pattern.
"Something like a herringbone style with your planks will completely elevate your space and make it look so much more high-end," he said.
The pattern in the wood will show a personal flair while creating a "visual pathway" that tricks the eye, making a room look bigger.
A chevron or herringbone floor can be more expensive, Grey said, depending on your home and needs.

But the extra effort and expense will make your space look more beautiful instantly, and have a timeless appeal you can keep for years, Grey explained.
"In my opinion, it is so worth it," he said.
