The Nintendo 64 launched in Japan and the USA in 1996, and ranks as one of the best-loved consoles of all time.

Normally the console was grey – but a special gold version of the console was released in the US and Japan.

In North America, this Gold Nintendo 64 was released as a Limited Edition console and sold exclusively at Toys 'R' Us, according to PriceCharting.com.

And the collector website says that a fully "new" boxed up version of the console is worth $4,775.

This rises to an even higher $5,252.50 if you've got it professionally graded.

Even if it's not new, it still has a value of $2,000 if it's "complete" in the box.

But the price drops quickly if you've only got a loose version of the console, with a reported value of $184.50.

"We update our prices daily from sources across the internet so you can be sure the data is accurate and timely," PriceCharting.com explained.

The box alone has a listed value of $800 on the site, and the manual is said to be worth $500.

Of course, your own experience trying to sell your golden Nintendo 64 may vary.

You might find that you end up with offers that are bigger or smaller than PriceCharting, as you're ultimately dealing with human collectors.

But it's a great rough guide for how much your console may be worth.

According to the website, as many as 50,000 of this console variant were made.

So there's a chance you might have the console somewhere in your home, gathering dust.

Nintendo began developing the console in 1993 under the codename Project Reality.

It received critical acclaim, with reviewers particularly impressed with the quality of available games and the impressive 3D graphics.

However there were some complaints about a lack of games available at launch.

The console was the home for some of the best-loved games of all time, including Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and GoldenEye 007.
